How long have you been in business?
My company Third Coast Properties evolved just a couple of years ago. But before real estate, I worked in a number of areas at IBM, for 23 years, all of which I’ve been able to directly apply in the real estate world.
My company’s name stemmed from the 1980’s theme of Austin being referred to as the "third coast" (California was the west coast, then there’s the East coast, then AUSTIN!)
What exactly do you do?
We have half a dozen agents. They are all experienced and work hard to get people in homes. While our focus is primarily residential (sales, leasing, foreclosures, new construction, relocations, etc), we also handle commercial transactions. With the variety of aspects in real estate, I look forward to growing the business and continuing to branch out.
How long have you been in Austin?
Although I spent 2 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana a LONG time ago, I have been in Austin over 35 years and call it "home." Although I traveled around the U.S. performing audits while at IBM, I remained based in Austin, which is odd given the fact some folks say IBM stands for "I’ve Been Moved."
Have you or your business received any awards or special accomplishments?
Recently our firm was named in the top 10 of real estate companies that handle relocations from Ft. Hood Army Base. Education is important to me, and I hold several real estate designations, but none that many folks will recognize in this article, so I will refrain from listing them here.
Are you involved in any special events or activities?
In terms of community activities, I participate in Blue Santa, and hold memberships with the Women’s Chamber of Commerce of Texas, Women’s Council of Realtors (WCR), and the Asian Real Estate Professionals (AREP).
What do others NOT know about you or your business that you would like to share?
I played women’s soccer & some co-ed soccer for 13 years. It’s lots of fun and a great way to relieve stress. (Our team always played to win of course!)
What is the best advice you've ever received, and what advice would you give those that are just starting out their careers?
It came from my last manager at IBM (before I was laid off). He said, "If what you are doing isn’t working or not getting you where you want to be, then maybe you should aim HIGHER." I believe this can be relevant to others in their personal life as well as in business. It is just as tough in the real estate world as it is in the corporate world, and when I find myself banging my head on a wall, that advice makes me stop and rethink whether to pick another wall or try something different that is BIGGER.
One should never give up or think small. Enjoy all that you can in life, for nothing lasts forever.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I am divorced but have 2 awesome children. My daughter is 17 years old and my son 16. Both excel in most everything they do.
Much of my time growing up was spent water skiing & other water sports on Lake Travis and Lake Austin, along with enjoying all levels of football (go Longhorns!).
I am a "late night" person and my values include trust, integrity, a strong work ethic, lots of humor and I persevere to help others. Throughout my life, "giving back" to the community has always been important.
